Summary

For Penny Lee high school was a total nonevent。 Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she somehow managed to land a boyfriend, he doesn’t actually know anything about her。 When Penny heads to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer, it’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind。

Sam’s stuck。 Literally, figuratively, emotionally, financially。 He works at a café and sleeps there too, on a mattress on the floor of an empty storage room upstairs。 He knows that this is the god-awful chapter of his life that will serve as inspiration for when he’s a famous movie director but right this second the seventeen bucks in his checking account and his dying laptop are really testing him。

When Sam and Penny cross paths it’s less meet-cute and more a collision of unbearable awkwardness。 Still, they swap numbers and stay in touch—via text—and soon become digitally inseparable, sharing their deepest anxieties and secret dreams without the humiliating weirdness of having to see each other。

The book wasn’t bad but if your looking for a love story right from the beginning, this is not the book for you。 The main love story is a very slow burn。

That was a very disappointing ending。 The book wasnt hard to read but I wasnt too excited to pick it up each day but I was curious enough to want to know how it ended。。。total letdown

I have read mixed reviews about this one。。So I had partly low expectations。。I think that kinda worked because, this book got me。 I totally loved it!It's not perfect, it's very judgmental, tons of pop culture references, but it totally worked for me。I love Penny and Sam(my), Jude also, Mallory too。。 wow, nobody in the book was a total amusement, but they all perfectly fit in the book。It was amusing for me to be inside Penny's and Sam's mind。 They don't have the perfect thoughts, they aren't even I have read mixed reviews about this one。。So I had partly low expectations。。I think that kinda worked because, this book got me。 I totally loved it!It's not perfect, it's very judgmental, tons of pop culture references, but it totally worked for me。I love Penny and Sam(my), Jude also, Mallory too。。 wow, nobody in the book was a total amusement, but they all perfectly fit in the book。It was amusing for me to be inside Penny's and Sam's mind。 They don't have the perfect thoughts, they aren't even good most of the time, but they are very real。How they think, how they talked, how they felt, how they interacted was very real to me。 Everything felt real to me。 Penny's bizarreness, out-of-this-world characteristics also worked for me。Wow, I totally didn't expect it, but after ending this book, I was still feeling it。I totally loved it! 。。。more

I love this book!! It’s such a cute story, well-written, well-paced with such bright and energetic writing I literally couldn’t put it down!! That hasn’t happened since Six of Crows。 Penny and I are the same person, I swear。 We even text the same way, while being awkward/shy around others at first。 I highly recommend this for a fluffy read。

So stinking cute。 I devoured this book when I should have taken my time and enjoyed the ride, but I couldn’t put it down。 One of those books where you miss the characters as soon as it’s over。

I’ve been reading novels for more than sixty years now, and while there are a number of authors who are so reliable I will read anything they write, and while I don’t hesitate to re-read books I’ve enjoyed in the past, I’m still always on the look-out for new authors whose work seems to be well received。 I never let a month go by without picking up at least two or three books by authors who are entirely new to me -- either because they’re new at the game or because I just haven’t discovered them I’ve been reading novels for more than sixty years now, and while there are a number of authors who are so reliable I will read anything they write, and while I don’t hesitate to re-read books I’ve enjoyed in the past, I’m still always on the look-out for new authors whose work seems to be well received。 I never let a month go by without picking up at least two or three books by authors who are entirely new to me -- either because they’re new at the game or because I just haven’t discovered them。 And sometimes they turn out to be so good, they get added to my “read everything they’ve done” list。 I think Choi is going to be one of those。Choi was born in Seoul, grew up in south Texas, moved to New York and is now working out of (I think) Los Angeles。 And while she had written a few comics for DC (her brother is a comic book artist), this is apparently her first text-only novel。 And it just brims over with sparkling originality。Penny Lee, the narrator in alternating chapters, is the brainy type, a brand new seventeen-year-old freshman at UT-Austin, and she’s very excited to be there。 She has heretofore lived in the shadow of her single mother, a total MILF, but now she can begin to be her own person。 (Back in 9th Grade, “she figured out that she wouldn’t be popular until she was a grown-up and that was fine because life was a long con。”) She’s also the sort of always-prepared person whose backpack can be depended upon to supply tissues, handi-wipes, Band-Aids, erasers, thumb drives, and anything else someone in her vicinity might need during a typical day。 The other narrator is Sam Becker, twenty-one, and the son of an alcoholic mother who steals from him, but he can’t ditch her anyway。 He’s a talented baker who sleeps upstairs over the coffee shop where he works, but he really wants to be a documentary film maker, if only he could afford school fees。Penny isn’t really looking for love, just friends, and she’s maybe finding them with her new roommate in the dorm, Jude, and the people she knows。 And one of those is Sam, who, technically was Jude’s uncle by marriage for a few years when they were younger。 And when Penny meets Sam, she’s smitten almost immediately (“smitten mitten kittens,” she admits to herself), but she can’t say anything because Jude has made it clear that Uncle Sam is off=limits。 Anyway, Sam has a long-running relationship with Lorraine, a blindingly gorgeous girl from a moneyed family with whom he fell heavily in love, and who manipulates him shamelessly, but he can’t escape being in her orbit。So that’s the set-up, and how Penny and Sam, gradually get together, and how both of them come to terms with their mothers, and with the world in general, makes for a delightful and absorbing story。 This one is marketed as “Young Adult,” but just because the main characters are young doesn’t mean their worldviews aren’t complex and adult。 The style is crisp and highly visual (this would make a good film) and you will will quickly become absorbed in the lives of the two protagonists。 Choi has written two more novels since this one and I’ll be lining them up。 。。。more

extremely disappointing。 was full of pretentious, judgmental characters & unnecessary drama。 i thought the “falling in love over text” concept was cute, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough to save this train-wreck。

What a super cute read。 I loved the texting conversations the most, I found them to be very adorable。 Did I mention this is a cute book? Because it is。 Read it。

i’ve been reading this book for 2 years and i still haven’t finished it。 it’s not bad enough for one star but it’s so uninteresting and nothing is really happening。

Madly Jane

The two stars for this book goes to Sam, whom I liked well enough and felt some empathy for。 The rest, BLAH。

*SPOILERS。。 MAYBE?* 4。5。 This book was a great read!!! It’s kinda like a corny, teenage romance book but a lot heavier and more complex if that makes sense。 Penny and Sam are such complex characters。 Sam is a laid-back, chill person with a lot of baggage from his childhood and a insanely pretty ex that he’s hung up on。 While Penny, is a reserved, always prepared, some what uptight (in a semi good way), amazing writer who is always in her head。 Seeing their dynamic together and watching their rom *SPOILERS。。 MAYBE?* 4。5。 This book was a great read!!! I guess we’ll never know。。 I wished the ending gave a little more into their relationship and where their relationship stood after their first official date。 But nonetheless overall great read。 This book made me so happy such a feel good book。 Penny and Sam forever。 。。。more

It took me so long to read this! At some parts I was very intrigued and some parts I wondered if they really were necessary to the storyline。 I am very happy with how it ended though, and I do like the topics that were touched on in this book!

It was a fun and easy read :) loved the characters so much! Although I wish we could have seen a little more of Sam and Penny actually dating。 I feel like the end was really rushed。

It was like watching a cute little rom-com。 This book had a lot of things I liked, strong friendship between girlfriends, a sci-fi subplot, witty flirting, a spontaneous drive to the beach(can I have atleast one this year please)。 I couldn't relate to the family issues both the characters had, all the families were just too complicated - friendship was the only thing that got them going。 It's a good plot device, but it felt exaggerated。 Overall a good read! 2⭐️Ta książka była bezużyteczna。 Nie wniosła do mojego życia absolutnie nic, bohaterowie byli nijacy i nie mogłam się z nimi polubić。 Czytałam o wiele lepsze。

Sooo HahAnother book that I was excited to read, so much that I even did a book exchange for it but then promptly ended up disappointed。 It was just - just。 So okay。 Forgive me for I have forgotten the MC's name - was it Poppy? And then we have Sam, the uncle of the friend。 That was, umm, kinda awkward at first ngl。 Well, its about the emergency contact thingy they develop when Poppy? bears witness to Sam having a panic attack in the middle of the road。 Sweet。 I actually liked that, how the book Sooo HahAnother book that I was excited to read, so much that I even did a book exchange for it but then promptly ended up disappointed。 It was just - just。 So okay。 Forgive me for I have forgotten the MC's name - was it Poppy? So thankful for this tender and funny romance, it’s the perfect book to get you out of a reading slump。 The characters are weirdly relatable and the romance is one that we can all relate to specially in our century。 Definitely recommend for you to read。 Can’t wait to read Mary H。K。 Choi’s next book!

I really wanted to love this book。 I really did。 The storyline seemed so cute, it has so much potential。 But honestly? I was bored。 I’m a person that can’t not finish a book once started but oh my gosh it was a struggle。 The story moved slowly, it took almost halfway through the book for some excitement to happen。 Then it was truly not until the last 20 pages of the book where everything happened。 I wish the ending happened halfway through, and then the book continued。 I don’t regret reading it, I really wanted to love this book。 I really did。 The storyline seemed so cute, it has so much potential。 But honestly? I loved this book。 Texts in books is one of my favorite ways to get an understanding of characters and how they interact with each other。 It's such a good read that tackles so many things, and I love that it ended the way it did! New to me author。 I loved this book and will definitely read more from her。 I loved Sam and Penny and their story。 I'm also trying to read more characters who are POC and Penny is Asian American。 Both Sam and Penny were raised by single moms。 New to me author。 I loved this book and will definitely read more from her。 I loved Sam and Penny and their story。 I'm also trying to read more characters who are POC and Penny is Asian American。 Both Sam and Penny were raised by single moms。 。。。more

This has been on my TBR for so long and I've picked it up from the library multiple times yet each time never got around to reading it before I would have to return it。 I should've taken that as the sign to remove Emergency Contact from my list but I guess it's too late for that now。I tend to enjoy books with unique story telling aspects (texts, diary entries, etc) so I looked forward to picking this up because of that。 Unfortunately I ended up disliking the characters so much that I spent most This has been on my TBR for so long and I've picked it up from the library multiple times yet each time never got around to reading it before I would have to return it。 I should've taken that as the sign to remove Emergency Contact from my list but I guess it's too late for that now。I tend to enjoy books with unique story telling aspects (texts, diary entries, etc) so I looked forward to picking this up because of that。 Unfortunately I ended up disliking the characters so much that I spent most of the book skimming it wondering if I should just suck it up and DNF it already。Penny was very much an "I'm not like other girls" girl and it got on my nerves almost immediately。 She reduced other characters to stereotypes even while she herself acted as a stereotype。 Sam was a fine character but he was also flat。 Neither of them was very open and while they had brief moments of vulnerability these seemed to come out of nowhere and they pulled me out of the story overall。There wasn't really a central plot line either so I felt like I had nothing to root for by the time the conclusion came around。 There was conflict and some minor personal growth but overall nothing happened。 Stepping back from the book I don't think I'll critique the romantic relationship too much (even though I did feel like it came out of nowhere) simply because I understand how easy college relationships can go from 0-100 and back again (especially if you meet someone on a dating app)。I think that if I had read this closer to when it came out I would have enjoyed it a bit more but at this point I was bored and annoyed more than I enjoyed it。 。。。more
